PATTERN RECOGNITION: DAVID DINKINS IS NOT MAYOR. In a not so subtle reminder of the years when New York City flight patterns were diverted away from the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, at the request of Mayor David N. Dinkins, several planes cruised by Arthur Ashe Stadium Friday at surprisingly close range. With a trompe l’oeil in effect during the late afternoon hours, some of those planes looked like they might graze the Ashe stadium walls. Here’s one aircraft that looked like it could practically come in for a landing. The proximity of these flights to Arthur Ashe Stadium made for a mesmerizing display, prompting thoughts of solid geometry, noise control, flight patterns, and the upcoming 10-year anniversary of 9/11.
